If you have an aerobic system, it has a chlorine tube. Chlorine kills germs in the water before it sprays into your yard.
Pool tablets look the same, but they aren’t
Pool tablets are often made with a different kind of chlorine. Mixed with the wrong things, they can give off gas or even catch fire. They aren’t made for septic systems. Texas rules say to use tablets made for wastewater.
How to tell them apart
Read the label. Septic tablets say they’re for wastewater or septic use. They’re usually calcium hypochlorite. If the bucket says pool or spa, don’t use it in your septic system.
How often to add them
It depends on how much water your home uses. Many homes need new tablets every month or two. Check the tube. If it’s empty, add more.
Let’s handle it
On our aerobic plans, we add chlorine at each visit. You don’t have to buy it or think about it.
And one safety tip: store chlorine in a cool, dry place, away from kids, pets, and other chemicals.
