How Often Should You Pump a Septic Tank in Central Texas?

This is the question we hear more than any other. The short answer is every 3 to 5 years for most homes. But your home might need it sooner.

What changes the answer

Three things matter most.

  • How big your tank is. A 1,000 gallon tank fills faster than a 1,500 gallon tank.
  • How many people live there. Four people make a lot more waste than two.
  • What goes down the drain. A garbage disposal adds a lot of solids.

A family of four on a 1,000 gallon tank may need a pump every 2 to 3 years. A retired couple on a bigger tank may go 5 years or more.

Why waiting too long costs more

Your tank holds the solids. The water flows out to the drain field. When the tank gets too full, solids slip out with the water. They clog the soil in the field. A pump-out costs a few hundred dollars. A new drain field can cost many thousands.

Don’t know when it was last pumped?

That’s common, mostly if you just bought the house. If you can’t find a record, plan on a pump soon. We’ll check how full it’s and write it down for you. Then you’ll know for next time.

Keep that record with your house papers. If you sell, the buyer will ask for it.
