A septic alarm can be loud. It’s supposed to be. It means something isn’t working right, and it wants you to know before it gets worse.
What the alarm means
Most alarms go off for one of two reasons.
- The water in the tank is too high. A pump may have stopped, or a float may be stuck.
- The air pump on an aerobic system stopped.
First steps
- Press the silence button. Most panels have one. This only stops the sound. It doesn’t fix the problem.
- Check the breaker for the septic system. Flip it off and back on if it tripped.
- Use as little water as you can. No laundry, no long showers.
- If the alarm comes back on or the light stays on, call us.
Don’t ignore it
If the water is high and you keep using it, the tank can back up into the house. Or untreated water can go out to the yard. Both are worse than a service call.
Write down what the panel shows, like which light is on. That helps us bring the right parts.
