Septic problems almost never show up all at once. They give small signs first. If you catch them early, the fix is often small too.

Watch for these

  • Drains in the house are slow, and more than one at a time
  • You hear gurgling in the pipes when nothing is running
  • Toilets are slow to flush, or back up after a big rain
  • There’s a bad smell outside near the tank or the field
  • The ground over the drain field is wet or soft when it hasn’t rained
  • One strip of grass is much greener than the rest of the yard
  • An alarm is going off on an aerobic system

What to do first

Use less water for a day. Skip the washer and the dishwasher. Take short showers. That gives the system a little room.

Then call us. If waste is coming up into a tub or toilet, call right away. That one can’t wait.

Don’t just wait it out

A full tank or a broken pump doesn’t fix itself. Waiting lets solids flow into the drain field. That’s where small problems turn into big ones.
