If you have an aerobic septic system, you may have gotten a letter from your county about a maintenance contract. Here’s what that’s about.

The rule

Texas has rules for septic systems, run by the TCEQ and your county. For most aerobic systems, the rules say a licensed provider must check the system 3 times a year. That’s about once every 4 months. The provider sends a report to the county after each visit.

When a new aerobic system is put in, the installer usually covers the first 2 years. After that, you pick a provider and sign a new contract. A few counties let some home owners do their own checks after training. Ask your county what they allow.

What happens at a visit

  • We check the air pump and the alarm
  • We look at the control box and timer
  • We check the spray heads or drip lines
  • We add chlorine if needed
  • We clean filters
  • We send the report to the county

What if the contract runs out?

The county can find out, because no reports come in. They may send you a notice. It’s easier to keep a contract going than to catch up later.
