How to Find Septic Permit Records in Travis County, TX

A country road in Central Texas

Want to know what kind of septic system you have, how big the tank is, or where the drain field runs? The county permit file is the best place to look. Here’s how to get it in Travis County.

Can you look up septic permits online in Travis County?

Yes. Travis County has a free public search portal for septic records made before January 2014. It has permits, inspections, site drawings, and licenses to operate. Newer permits are kept in MyGovernmentOnline. Anyone can make an account there to see them. Can’t find yours? Use the county’s open records page to ask for it.

This is for homes outside city limits. If you live inside a city, ask your city too.

What the permit file can tell you

  • If your system is conventional or aerobic
  • How big your tank is
  • A drawing of where the tank and drain field are
  • When it was put in, and who put it in

What if there’s no file?

That happens a lot with older homes. Many systems put in before the 1990s were never written down. No file doesn’t mean something is wrong. It just means we find out the old way, by looking.
